Pomona Medical Brigade March 2017 Nicaragua

Andrea's Message

Dear Friends and Family,

I have the incredible opportunity to travel to Nicaragua this spring with a chapter of Global Medical Brigades (GMB). GMB is an international organization that allows college students to actively fight poverty and disease in developing countries. By taking a holistic approach to international development, we are able to work with the locals to help stimulate growth and self-sufficiency in these communities. Our team will include students and doctors, all of whom are donating their time and resources to participate in this brigade. I have joined the GMB chapter at CPP. This spring, (March 18 - March 25) we will be going to set up free medical clinics for thousands of people living in rural areas with little to no access to medical care and treatment.

I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to make a global difference and would appreciate any support that you’re willing to provide, whether it’s love and prayers for safety or donations to help cover the cost.

As students, we fund raise not only for our personal travel expenses, but also for the costs of medications and supplies, which we use to provide free treatment to the communities we visit. For every one volunteer that is sent over, we are able to treat 55 patients for free. Gofundme.com is a website that will allow you to make a donation to our trip, and you can make it directly under my name to help me reach my goal of $1,665.

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades offers 7-9 day Medical Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua. During a Medical Brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.
