Passionate About:

I joined Global Medical Brigades because I am interested in pursuing a career in medicine, I love volunteering, and I believe that participating in a brigade would help me gain valuable community-focused experience. The Global Brigades mission of "empower(ing) volunteers and under-resourced communities to resolve global health and economic disparities and inspire all involved to collaboratively work towards an equal world" speaks to me greatly because of previous experience I have with communities in under resourced regions. In summer 2015 I interned at a medical home in northern NYS, which is a collaboration organization of hospitals, physicians, nurses, social workers, and sociologists that aims to improve the quality of healthcare and lower healthcare costs in the northern NY and VT region. Through this internship and from growing up in the northern NY region, I was able to directly observe the extent to which certain populations can suffer in under resourced communities. Although I was not able to have an impact on the lives of the patients of the medical home because I am not a professional medical specialist, I would like to combine the inspiration I gained from studying underprivileged populations with the passion I have for helping others, and make an actual difference with the Global Brigades.

ABOUT me: At Brandeis University I’m pursuing Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology and HSSP: Health, Science, Society and Policy. This year I am serving as a Roosevelt Fellow for Academic Services (peer advisor); the Co-President, dancer, and choreographer of the Adagio Dance Company; the senior advisor of the Brandeis Korean Student Association; and a church leader in the Cornerstone Church in Boston. My passions include advising, dancing, creating music, volunteering, and studying pathophysiology and public health.

Volunteer Activity Message

Global Brigades offers 7-9 day Medical Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua. During a Medical Brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.
