UMB Medical/Dental January 2014 Honduras

Brittany's Message

Dear Friends, Family, and Good-hearted friends of friends,

This winter I will be travelling to Honduras with a group of students from the University of Maryland, Baltimore to participate in a Medical/Dental Global Health Brigade! I know there is a description here already... but here is another:
Global Medical Brigades is an interdisciplinary organization on campus that travels abroad to provide medical services to those in need. Specifically, we are going to a rural part of Honduras where we will set up a clinic at a local school that is easily accessible to those in the area. GMB sees about 700-1,000 patients on every brigade. At each clinic there is a triage area where they intake the patients and measure their blood pressure, weight, blood glucose, temperature, etc. Then the patients are sent to the dental clinic where fluoride treatments or extractions are performed, or to the doctor. Afterwards the patient is sent to the pharmacy to fill any prescriptions they might need. While the patient is waiting for the prescription to be filled, the patient can sit in on a "charla"— an informal chat of sorts to teach the patients about the importance of general hygiene and methods to maintain health. The students who attend the brigades usually take turns at each station so that they can get different experiences.

This is an amazing experience that will allow me to help provide services to people who might otherwise not be afforded access to such services. I plan to use my Spanish speaking abilities to learn likely more, than I will be able to teach those whom I meet on this brigade. I am currently in a Medical Spanish course that I think will help prepare me to provide optimal service in Spanish.

Please consider donating whatever you can afford so that I might be able to go on this Brigade. Upon my return, I will gladly update you on my experience so that you might see how you helped those in communities in Honduras where access to healthcare is not only limited, but greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your consideration!

Sincerely,

Brittany

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on Medical and Dental Brigades work closely together with licensed medical and dental professionals to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient receives a physician consultation, public health talk, and prescribed medicines as well as have access to PAP smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Children, in addition, receive teeth cleaning, a fluoride treatment, and vitamins necessary for proper growth and development. Volunteers have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
