Passionate About:

Hello,

My name is Ali Quilitzsch and I am currently attending Ferris State University. Today, I am asking you just to take a moment to watch the attached video and to listen to why I am asking for your help. This fall I joined a Registered Student Organization (RSO) at my school that is called Global Brigades. Global Brigades is the largest, nonprofit, student-led, development and health organization in the world. I will be traveling with a group of students to Honduras in May 2016. My group, the Public Health Brigade, will be going to help a developing country improve their quality and way of life. You may ask why go to Honduras, why help them? In Honduras, more than 50% of the population lives in poverty, 40% of people have no access to healthy drinking water. Most of the rural communities are isolated and are not within several hours of a licensed medical professional. At the rate some of the communities are going they will be a desert in a few years. Honduras has a lot to offer everone, from the Mayian ruins to the rainforests it can be a beautiful area with just a little help. So, when my group arrives in Honduras we will work with communities to learn how to prevent common illnesses. We will do this through: home development, allowing community members to take charge of some of the projects we do and show them how to build and use the tools we use, and providing them with the education they need to keep themselves and their community healthy. While we are there we will also be building and constructing a few things. It will depend on the country's need when we arrive but, there are a couple possibilities of what we will be doing. As a group we could be: building eco-stoves, latrines, concrete floors, water storage units, or showers. So I ask you today to help raise money for me to go on this amazing trip and to help build and create a better way of life for the people of Honduras.

Thank you for your time,
Ali Quilitzsch

Volunteer Activity Message

Global Brigades offers 7-9 day Medical Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua. During a Medical Brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.
