Microfinance Brigades at Vanderbilt University

Vanderbilt University is a chapter of Global Business Brigades, an international movement of university students and professionals building economic opportunities in the developing world. We work alongside promising entrepreneurs and experienced year-round staff to create financial opportunities in remote, rural, and under resourced areas of Honduras and Ghana. We work with communities to build community-owned banks to provide access to loans, savings accounts and financial literacy for community members. Volunteers assist in consulting micro-enterprises, assessing loan capacity payments and providing financial literacy workshops to families. nnIn conjunction with our Business Program, Global Brigades also supports communities with healthcare, sanitation and clean water projects, and uniquely implements these programs in a holistic model to meet a community’s health and economic goals. Our model systematically builds community ownership and collaboratively executes programs with the end goal of sustainably evolving to a relationship of impact monitoring. Microfinance Brigades Special Projects

Microfinance Brigade volunteers work with community bank loan officers to consult potential borrowers on improving financial sustainability through a 7 day Microfinance Brigade in Honduras. Student volunteers can either join an existing Microfinance Brigades chapter on their campus or create their own chapter and recruit other volunteers. Volunteers provide rural communities with the educational, financial, and organizational resources necessary to sustainably drive their own economic development. By partnering with other international organizations in microfinance, Microfinance Brigades provides the financial backing and technical support to create and strengthen independent community banks.

Microfinance Brigades Special Summer Projects

The Microfinance Program is designed to provide rural community members with a community banking system, know as Cajas Rurales in Honduras and Community Development Funds in Ghana, with access to loans, financial literacy programs and education to increase production and foster a culture of savings and growth. Currently the Microfinance Program in Honduras* is working with six rural community banks, which include ninety members, an agricultural and a basic grains store. There are two savings programs for children and all of the banks have Honduran legal status. The goal for the 2012 summer internship is to enrich the program’s current model and address current bank and financial needs within the communities. In Ghana, there are currently four Community Development Funds, with about 150-300 savers each, both adult and children accounts. There are a few community-led cooperative business projects also connected with the Fund as well as an educational scholarship program. The goal of the 2012 summer internships will be to support the development and refinement of the current Microfinance model and support its implementation through the various initiatives of the Development Funds in each community.

Mid-Western University Medical Chapter

Mid-Western University is a chapter of Global Medical Brigades, an international movement of students and medical professionals working alongside local communities and staff to implement sustainable health systems. We work in remote, rural, and under resourced communities in Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua and Ghana who would otherwise have limited to no access to health care. Each community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are provided access to healthcare and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. nnIn conjunction with our Medical Program, Global Brigades also supports communities with economic development, sanitation and clean water projects, and uniquely implements these programs in a holistic model to meet a community’s health and economic goals. MidAmerica Nazarene University Business Kambia

Global Brigades is a US 501c3 nonprofit recognized for its international health and sustainable development work abroad. Through an evidence-based model, we work alongside local staff and community members to build projects that tangibly improve lives in Honduras, Panama, Ghana and Greece. Kambia is transforming global education by enhancing university and college curriculums. Our programs present students with a community challenge and use experts on the ground to analyze and problem solve over the course of a semester whether that is virtual or in-person. Our on the ground staff trains and empowers local community leaders in the formation of (depending on the program Medical Class, CHEs. Public Health, Basic Sanitation Committee, etc) The Basic Sanitation Committee is responsible for carrying out in-home assessments and monitoring the status of the projects. In conjunction with our Public Health Program, Global Brigades also supports communities with healthcare, economic development and clean water projects, and uniquely implements these programs in a holistic model to meet a community’s health and economic goals. Miles College is a chapter of Global Medical Brigades, an international movement of students and medical professionals working alongside local communities and staff to implement sustainable health systems.
