Passionate About:

An interdisciplinary approach to observing issues I am passionate about; people's access to food and health services. Finding an intersection where both the environment's health and the public's health can coexist and live sustainability, has lead me to embark on a trip to meet some of the communities, schools, and farms of Nicaragua this Winter! On this trip I would not only help farm lands alongside my team of Cal and SF state students, but in addition I plan on researching how the environment's health and the public's health intersect. I am extremely excited about getting to know the local community, families, and students in Nicaragua; documenting families food insecurities. From team building activities with the local community to service-work project at Alberto Berrios, local organic Cashew farms, to traveling to a local school, I am excited about serving others through education, empowerment, cultural-sensitivity, and most importantly altruistic service.

Volunteer Activity Message

Come join us in our efforts in Nicaragua this coming Spring Break! GSEs Nicaragua program focuses on sustainable agriculture practices in Chacraseca. The goal of our projects is to create and maintain biointensive gardens that produce healthy food for young students at all 13 schools in Chacraseca. Each year students work in collaboration with Nicaraguan leaders and students on projects such as creating garden beds, building a greenhouse, or setting up irrigation.

Traveling with GSE means working alongside our Nicaraguan peers, hiking up a volcano through the mist of Lake Nicaragua, and visiting beautiful colonial Leon, a center of culture and history with many beautiful murals and cathedrals. Students experience Nicaragua through discussions about the countries social and environmental history. GSE Nicaragua staff and students welcome groups to their community and share their experience working on their school farms. Participants sample delicious local cuisine served at family farms, at local restaurants, as well as meals specially prepared for us and brought to our hostel.
