As I grew up in a low income community in Chicago I have seen the detrimental effects of how not accessing healthcare affects a community, and thus since middle school I have worked to address public health issues through community education by advocating for teen pregnancy/ HIV/AIDS awareness, that provide help and support to victims of sexual assault (specifically women), and that promote early education to children of Spanish and low income communities.
To be part of the Global Medical Brigades is a privilege, an experience that is valuable not only because of its humanitarian purpose but also because I am culturally competent and can understand the struggle of not being able to afford basic health care. I volunteer to learn and to improve the conditions and access to healthcare to low income communities that would otherwise not acquire these basic rights
