I'm heading off to Kenya with ThinkImpact’s Innovation Institute for two months! I get to live with a family in a rural community near Kaloleni and become really familiar with the community. I’ll work closely with the people to identify local, sustainable solutions to the challenges they face. We’ll create something together that community members will own and operate for long after we leave.

I’m so excited for this summer because it feels like the beginning of my career. While I have a passion for international development, I’ve only ever spent a week in a developing country before. I finally have an opportunity to apply and test the knowledge I’ve gained at school (studying international development). The work I do in the field this summer will really enhance my understanding of development issues and give me better foundation for my class work next year. I can’t believe there’s only one more year before I enter the real world and try to find a job. Yikes!

If you’re not convinced yet, I’ve got a few cards to play…First, I’ll cry poor college student who works two jobs. Second, I’ll remind you that my 21st birthday comes along in July – I’ll accept donations as early birthday presents, as I’ll be in Kenya in July. Next, I’ll offer to give you large prints of the beautiful photographs I plan on taking. Or if you’re into handmade crafty anklets and bracelets I’ll make you something nice.
