Passionate About:

A story I picked up from AmeriCares; "An elderly man was walking along the beach. He saw that a storm had washed up onto the sand what looked like thousands of starfish, now all dying in the sun. He then saw a little boy picking up starfish, one by one, and gently returning them to the safety of the sea so they would live.

The man said to the boy, 'Why are you bothering? Can’t you see there are thousands of starfish dying here? What possible difference can you make?'

The little boy picked up one more of the starfish and returned it to the sea, and said to the man, 'It made a difference to that one.'"

My passion for helping those born into a world with little access to the basic resources they need to survive is what drives me to commit my time and career aspirations towards empowering people around the world to live the lives they deserve. After interning at a global health and emergency response non-profit this summer that works with partners in Honduras, I look forward to the opportunity to now be able to gain the perspective from the other end, alongside the inspiring heroes who I know will be changing my life and I hope our group will be able to do the same for the Honduras community we travel to.

Volunteer Activity Message

Volunteers on the Medical and Dental Brigades will be working closely together to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers will spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient will receive a physician consultation, teeth cleaning and a fluoride treatment as well as have access to pap smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Volunteers will have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
