When i help people for the sole reason of helping them, without the expectation of them necessarily returning the favor makes me feel good. As such, I feel it defines me as a person and it is quickly shaping my career decisions.

January 2012 CUNY Queens Medical Brigade

Volunteer Activity Description

Thank You for visiting our Page!

Medical Brigades at Queens College is a chapter of Global Brigades, the world's largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. Established in September 2010 on the Queens College campus, our chapter systematically works with more than 300 other university groups around the world to deliver and implement one of nine skill-based programs that benefit more than 130,000 Honduran and Panamanian community members annually.

Our upcoming Medical Brigade will be the first of many. We need your help to meet our goal! From January 4th-10th, 40 student volunteers will represent Queens College. Each student has been asked to raise funds to contribute to his or her own cost for the trip, $1450.

In addition to personal fundraising, we are still working as a group to raise the funds needed to purchase the medications (antibiotics, vitamins, topical meds, etc) and supplies to conduct the Brigade.

We have organized a series of fundraising events throughout the year to reach our goal of providing basic medical services to underserved villages in Honduras in January 2012. Through Restaurant Fundraisers such as Friday's and Applebee's, collaborating with our Athletics department and The Queens College Choral Society we not only spread the word of our mission but also raised funds.

As a Medical chapter we will work to establish sustainable health initiatives and provides relief where there is limited access to healthcare. Each community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are treated and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.

The funds raised will be used to help students representing Queens College conduct their first Medical Brigade in Honduras. With every student volunteer that attends a brigade, 55 more people are given the chance to receive medical care.

With your support this trip will be possible. If you believe in our cause, and would like to make a contribution to our chapter or an individual volunteer, Please click the DONATE button above and follow the subsequent steps.

We are very optimistic and excited about our first Brigade!
