January 2012 Columbia Microfinance Brigade, Ghana

Su Ann's Message

Hi friends,

I am headed to Ghana in early January to participate in a microfinance initiative.

I spent my past two winter breaks in Honduras and Kenya doing public health and conflict resolution work in small towns and border villages, and found that no matter what work I was there to do, locals always found certain contributions very useful.

For instance, in the mountainous village of Joyas, Honduras, children and adults alike spent their days and nights barefoot. This allows parasites from the ground to enter the bodies of children through the soles of their feet, making them sick and in some cases has proved to be fatal. Thus, shoes are always a very welcome contribution. In Busia, Kenya, there is but one single and under-resourced library in the entire community, and the locals are always looking forward to more books to be donated.

During this trip to Ghana, I intend to bring books, clothes and if necessary, boxes of the nutritional bar Plumpy Nut, which is used in many food aid interventions to cure severe malnutrition.

Any amount that you can contribute towards this cause will be very much appreciated! :)

Warmly,

Su Ann

Volunteer Activity Description

Fundraise with your Global Business Brigades chapter on campus to meet the minimum $1,500 USD annual chapter contribution.

The annual chapter contribution directly supports the Community Investment Fund, which enables year-round economic development in partner communities carried out by our local teams. The Community Investment Fund is a critical component to GB’s Sustainable Transition Plan. Once a partner community has met specific health and economic development goals and brigades are no longer necessary, GB transitions projects fully to the community and offers follow-up with our local staff.

The more you fundraise, the more impact we make together!

BUSINESS Suggested donation amount: $25
On average, $25 provides a micro-loan to increase one family’s income potential.
