Notre Dame Med/Dent/PH Brigade Nicaragua March 2015

Aaron's Message

My name is Aaron Tarnasky, and I am currently a junior at the University of Notre Dame. During March, for my spring break, I have been blessed with the opportunity to travel with Global Medical Brigades to Nicaragua to provide medical care and set up mobile clinics for rural communities of vastly underserved people.

My goal for as long as I can remember has been to be a doctor. I have always identified with doctors and that calling like no other. For me, it is how I can best serve others, and the intimacy of medical care is highly appealing.

However, only recently have I developed an interest in healthcare for the developing world. I had the opportunity to travel to Nicaragua this past Christmas to do the same sort of medical work. It was incredibly eye-opening and one of the best things I've ever done. I was blown away by how little healthcare the people of those rural communities receive, but also by how much it means to them. They opened their homes to us so we could set up clinics. It was also astounding the most common problems are things that overlooked in the developed nations. Simply by being present and bringing medication, many ailments can be alleviated. We also helped set up concrete floors and proper bathroom facilities in people's homes to prevent the onset of future disease. It was an amazing and productive experience!!

I would be so lucky and grateful to be able to return to Nicaragua and help many of the same communities. I fell in love with the country and the people we served. However, before I can go back and serve, I have to pay program expenses and airfare to the tune of $1800. Being a college student and having gone on the pervious trip, I have very little funds remaining. However, I cannot miss this opportunity. I'd be appreciative of any and all support you could give me!!

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on the Medical and Dental Brigades will be working closely together to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers will spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient will receive a physician consultation, teeth cleaning and a fluoride treatment as well as have access to pap smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Volunteers will have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
