SUNY Binghamton Medical/Dental/Public Health Brigade May 2015 Honduras

Adrianna's Message

Hi family and friends!

As some of you may know, I have been participating in trips with Global Brigades since the summer between my freshman and sophomore year of college. Ever since then I have been dedicated to this organization and have been flying to Central America in the summers. This is my last year in college (one more semester to go before I graduate in December 2015!) and I have the last brigade of my undergraduate career coming up in May 2015. Since I am no longer in Macaulay Honors College and am now in SUNY Binghamton, I do not have a stipend I can use towards paying for the trip. This will be the last opportunity I will have to go on a trip as a leader in Public Health, the career path I want to follow. It is my dream to help others via a different means than becoming a doctor or dentist, and going into Public Health is the way for me.

I would greatly appreciate if you all could help me on my, hopefully not, last journey with GB to Honduras and donate to my trip. Any donation is greatly appreciated!

How do you donate? You click on the link below and hit “Donate Now.” That will take you to a page that you will need to fill out. If you use credit card, there is a fee for using it, so I would suggest doing e-check, which is tax deductible! This organization is non-profit, majority (approximately 90%) of the program fees goes toward the communities we help in Honduras, whereas the rest goes to my housing, food, and transportation while I am on site.

Please share this with your family and friends!

Thank you all for all your support!

Love,
Adrianna

Volunteer Activity Description

SUNY Binghamton will participate in a 10 day Medical/Dental/Public Health Hybrid Brigade.

During a medical brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.

The current focus of the Public Health Program is to develop sustainable health solutions and establish a standard of health quality with an emphasis on prevention and education that will augment the other Global Brigades disciplines in Honduras. The Public Health Program achieves this by implementing in-home infrastructure projects, providing health education, and engaging community members. Each Public Health Brigade will work with individual families, local schools, and community leaders with a focus on holistic and preventative health measures on both an individual and community-wide scale.
