Passionate About:

As a student healthcare professional, having the opportunity to help people achieve wellness would be incredibly rewarding, particularly in a setting such as Honduras where healthcare is especially lacking. This opportunity specifically interests me because I can use the skills I have learned so far such as monitoring blood pressure, taking physical assessments, giving vaccinations and counseling patients on medications. I feel that I actually have something useful to offer to these people in need. I want to be a part of something that is much bigger than myself. Learning about the people of Honduras and their healthcare needs would provide me with invaluable insight about the world and its people, an understanding that I would be unable to gain elsewhere. I can’t wait to meet the people of Honduras!

About Us

University of Maryland Baltimore is a chapter of Global Medical Brigades, an international movement of students and medical professionals working alongside local communities and staff to implement sustainable health systems. We work in remote, rural, and under resourced communities in Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua and Ghana who would otherwise have limited to no access to health care. Each community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are provided access to healthcare and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. nnIn conjunction with our Medical Program, Global Brigades also supports communities with economic development, sanitation and clean water projects, and uniquely implements these programs in a holistic model to meet a community’s health and economic goals. Our model systematically builds community ownership and collaboratively executes programs with the end goal of sustainably evolving to a relationship of impact monitoring.
