Loyola U Water/PH Pilot August 2014 Ghana

Alex's Message

If the Jesuit education I have received, and still am receiving, since Kindergarten has taught me anything, it's that we are called to bring justice to the marginalized. It is our duty to be actively engaged in tackling the problems our world faces everyday. While I was in high school, I went on a service trip to El Salvador. The experience was very meaningful for me and has influenced the way I see the world. Because this trip had such an impact on me, it has caused me to look for other opportunities to bring justice to the world. Hence why I chose to attend Loyola University Chicago. Loyola has presented me with many opportunities to bring social justice to the world, just one of which is this service trip to Ghana with Global Brigades.

This is no secret, but your help and support goes a very long way! While these service trips can be expensive, the result is very meaningful and worthwhile – in fact it’s the only way some of these projects get done! I'm asking you to help support me through a financial donation, even if it's just $1.00! Even the smallest amount truly does make a difference. If you can't help financially, I very much understand! I just ask that you keep my brigade and I in your thoughts and prayers!

If you do choose to donate, be sure to select the option "make a donation on behalf of a volunteer" and select me, Alex Glenn.

I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Volunteer Activity Description

Water Brigades volunteers have an opportunity to pilot Public Health projects during their 10 day brigade. In addition, to implementing water systems to prevent water-related illnesses in communities with limited access to clean water volunteers work to improve basic home infrastructure and provide health education to help reduce the incidences of life-threatening, but preventable, diseases. Our in-country team members work with experts and community leaders to design rainwater harvesting and Public Health systems to serve individual homes and communities. Volunteers work side-by-side with community members to build projects, implement water filtration and sanitation solutions, teach about water collection and hygiene and organize community water counsels and school water clubs to maintain the projects. Between brigades our in-country team follows up in the community to ensure long-term sustainability and continued functionality of the project. Additionally Water Brigades and its volunteers provide education and training so that the community can properly administer, operate, and maintain their water systems and Public Health projects. With a holistic approach to development we plan to continue working with communities to improve their health and standard of living through the most fundamental resources on the planet, water and themselves.

A 10 day Water Brigade + Public Health Initiative provides volunteers with the opportunity to make a tangible impact to improve water access and quality of health in under-resourced communities while getting hands-on experience in the field of engineering, global health and sustainable development.
