Hi my name is Alex Watson and I am currently a junior at the University of Texas at Austin studying Public Health with a concentration in Health informatics and biostatics. Ever since I can remember, I have had a passion for helping people, which is why I want to go to Ghana. I hope to give the people of Ghana something we so often take for granted – water. These people need access to clean water in order to reduce so many water related illnesses such as Typhoid fever and Hepatitis A. I want to be a part of a cause in which 3.5 million people who currently lack access to safe drinking water in addition to 3,000 children who die because they don’t have access to safe drinking water remain living. I believe that all people were meant to have not only a life, but also one lived to the fullest degree.

Volunteer Activity Description

In August 2014, Global Water Brigades are going to the Central Region of Ghana to work with a community that has little or no access to clean water.

Water Brigades volunteers have an opportunity to pilot Public Health projects during their 10 day brigade. In addition, to implementing water systems to prevent water-related illnesses in communities with limited access to clean water volunteers explore Public Health solutions. Our in-country team members work with water experts and community leaders to design rainwater harvesting and Publich Health systems to serve individual homes and communities. Volunteers work side-by-side with community members to build projects, implement water filtration and sanitation solutions, teach about water collection and hygiene and organize community water counsels and school water clubs to maintain the projects. Between brigades our in-country team follows up in the community to ensure long-term sustainability and continued functionality of the project. Additionally Water Brigades and its volunteers provide education and training so that the community can properly administer, operate, and maintain their water systems and Public Health projects. With a holistic approach to development we plan to continue working with communities to improve their health and standard of living through the most fundamental resources on the planet, water and themselves.

A 10 day Water Brigade + Public Health Initiative provides volunteers with the opportunity to make a tangible impact to improve water access and quality of health in under-resourced communities while getting hands-on experience in the field of engineering, global health and sustainable development.
