Passionate About:

The opportunity for all individuals, no matter their location, race, gender, sexual identity, income status, etc., to have access to adequate, safe, and affordable healthcare has always been something I have felt and advocated strongly for. I have always believed the chance for a good quality of life should be a right instead of a privilege.

Alison's Message

My decision to become a nurse partially involved the fact that I knew I would be able to provide much needed volunteer services once I became an RN. During my time in nursing school I have been able to volunteer with some incredible stateside non-profits, but working abroad has always been a major aspiration of mine. This chance to work with Global Brigades will be one of the last opportunities I have to work with a non-profit before graduating, and I would cherish the chance to learn from other amazing health care providers that are doing what I aspire to do as a professional. With the Brigades not only will I be given the chance to work and treat patients while I'm in Nicaragua, but we will also be able to provide teaching and resources so they can maintain their health and improve their quality of life after we return home. We know health care is not just about treating the patient, but also making sure we provide them with the right tools and information so they can continue to be healthy and keep that high quality of life they deserve.

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades offers 7-9 day Medical Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua. During a Medical Brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.
