Analy Nicaragua Spring Break 2017

Aliya's Message

Being an emerging citizen in our globalized society, I feel a responsibility to better our interaction with communities across the globe through sustainable agriculture and strong international connections. As a member of this growing, modern generation, I realize that we have to start taking serious actions towards saving our environment. Small steps including bringing awareness and even helping out in your local community help promote the concept of positive change in all regions of the world, and can make a difference.

This is why going on the Global Student Embassy trip to Nicaragua is so essential to me. Given the opportunity to travel to a colonial city in the foothills of Nicaragua, I am so excited to work alongside many local environmentalists and community members of Boaco. Here I will get the chance to learn and work in an entirely different country and become immersed in their culture. Not only does what we are doing help insure an immediate change for this small thriving community, but it helps develope drive and determination into the minds of our young generation. This promotes a long term ideal of environmental stability and efficiency.

In Nicaragua our program incorporates learning new skills such as the biointensive method of farming. We will do volunteer work in the biointensive garden at Clinica Verde, which is a non-profit health clinic for Nicaraguan women and children. As members of GSE, we have partnered with Clinica Verde, to help provide healthy produce for the families and community members living there. I truly believe that when I return home for this amazing, growing journey, I will apply my new knowledge, and bring environmental and agricultural awareness to my community in Sebastopol California.

Volunteer Activity Description

TRAVEL.
Traveling with GSE involves everything from visiting a native bird sanctuary to hiking along Ecuador’s beautiful coastline. Students enjoy authentic Ecuadorian cuisine and collaborate on local projects with their international peers.

LEARN.
GSE uses hands-on service-learning projects and cultural exchanges to provide students with life changing learning opportunities. Students develop ecological literacy and participate in grassroots international relations while building crucial 21st century skills such as communication and collaboration.

IMPACT.
Each year during exchange programs, students plant 5,000 native trees in La Punta Gorda Preserve. Students also work along side their Ecuadorian peers at Fanny de Baird High School to further develop their school garden. The garden provides produce for the school community and offers an interactive education on local food systems and organic farming.

GROW.
Plants aren’t the only things that grow! International travel facilitates profound transformation for students. Students leave the trip with a better understanding of different cultures and people, inspiring them to become change makers and leaders in their own community.
