Cal Poly SLO Architecture Brigade June 2014

Amanda 's Message

Hi everyone!

I am a first year Architecture major at California Polytechnic State University, in San Luis Obispo and I am apart of Architecture Global Brigades. This summer I will be traveling to Honduras with students from Cal Poly and other schools to help work on large construction projects such as schools and health centers.

Honduras is the second poorest country in Central America, with more than 60% of the population living in poverty. Our goal is to not only provide these rural communities with better facilities, but also help educate the community for a more sustainable future.

Over the years I have taken many drafting and architecture classes, along with some experience with welding. One of my dreams has been to find a way to use my passion for design and architecture to help others in need. I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to travel outside the country and gain hands on experience with construction, while providing these communities and myself with the chance to grow.

The entire trip will cost $1500 for each student, which will go towards food, housing, airfare, and materials needed for the construction projects. The group Architecture Global Brigades at Cal Poly has many fundraising activities to help aid to the cost of our trip. Any donation large or small is greatly appreciated.

Thank you! If you have any questions feel free to email me at amstahler@yahoo.com

Volunteer Activity Description

Architecture Brigades volunteers from Cal Poly SLO will spend 7 days doing construction on large projects, such as schools and health centers, that will provide health and education infrastructure to benefit entire communities in rural Honduras.

On the brigade, students will learn about the necessity of the project, the justifications for the structures design, and a variety of local construction techniques. Depending on what point during the construction process they make their brigade, students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of construction processes, from foundation work to wood framing to detailing, and everything in between.

Volunteers do not need prior building expertise for the brigade, as they will be working alongside skilled masons who will guide students on proper building practices and safety precautions during building, while also educating volunteers of the use of local materials.

In addition to the construction aspects of the brigade, volunteers will be given the chance to create and host an interactive education lesson for members of the local community. The ages and demographics of the audience may vary, and the education topics cover basic concepts of architecture and design.

Combining the efforts of both the construction and educational aspects of the brigade, by the end of the week, volunteers on the Cal Poly SLO Architecture Brigade will be able to see the impact have made in the community!
