UCLA Medical/Dental Brigade June 2014 Honduras

Amanda's Message

Hello Everyone!
I just wanted to update everyone on the status of my Global Brigade Honduras fundraiser. Currently, I have met my Empowered account deadlines, and I want to send a HUGE thank you out to all of my family and friends that have helped me get this far in my fundraising effort. As of now I am working on the second half of the fundraiser, which requires me to purchase my gear/supplies, passport, medications, and various medical products that we will be using to help make the Brigade successful. This portion of the fundraiser is NOT through Empowered and I will be purchasing these supplies personally with the donations that are sent directly to me.
I want to thank everyone once again for believing in me and supporting me in my goals, and allowing me to get this far on my journey!!
With Love,
Amanda

Friends, Family and Loved Ones,
As many of you know and have followed me through the years, I aspire to attend medical school and am on my journey to applying. Over the past few years I successfully completed my time at Los Medanos Community College, transferred with academic honors to the University of California, Los Angeles where I am a Neuroscience major, and am an intern working in a research laboratory that focuses on the pediatric version of Multiple Sclerosis, Canavan. This summer I am registered to take my Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), and next year I will apply to medical school. If all goes as planned I will enroll in medical school in the Fall of 2016.
Through UCLA I have the incredible opportunity to travel to Honduras this coming summer, with a chapter of Global Medical Brigades (GMB). GMB is an international non-profit organization with chapters in colleges across the country and around the world. Our UCLA group has gone to Honduras, Panama, and Ghana in the past and will be returning to Honduras this summer for a week-long trip. GMB is a secular group that allows college students to actively fight the poverty and lack of resources that so many suffer through. In taking a holistic approach to international development, we not only give them immediate help with free medical and dental services, but also work with the community members to lay the groundwork for the communities to grow and become self sufficient. Our team will include undergraduate students, medical students and doctors, all of whom are donating their time and resources to participate in this brigade.
As a student volunteer participating in Global Brigade empowers the next generation of intellectuals, physicians and leaders. With a well-rounded and developed view of the world, and not just developed world around us, students are capable of making more informed decisions and approaching life with a more holistic approach. We live in a world where the average individual theoretically knows what is going on in other countries, and the conditions people live in. However, very few conceptually understand the world of medicine and public health outside of the realm that they were raised in. As a future physician I feel participating in Global Medical Brigades will enlighten my thinking and provide me the opportunity to develop a more holistic, worldly mindset—a characteristic every future physician should have. I feel so blessed to have been granted the chance to make an impact and I would appreciate any support that you’re willing to provide. Whether it’s love and prayers for safety or donations to help cover the cost.
As students we fundraise not only for our personal travel costs, but also for the medicine and supplies that we bring with us to provide for the communities at no cost. There are two ways to help me fundraise:

1. Empowered.org is a website that will allow you to make a tax-deductible gift to our trip, and you can make it directly under my name to help me reach my goal of $1,800. Below I have provided instructions and the online link for how to access my personalized Empowered Account.

2. I will need to purchase enough scrubs to wear daily, my passport and a handful of items to better ensure my safety and heath are maintained during the trip (additional immunizations, anti-malarial medication, ect). If you would prefer to donate through mail you can send an envelope with your gift to me directly to assist with these items. What money is not spent on purchasing these items will be deposited into my empowered account and go towards the cost of the trip. Please do make the check out to me (Amanda Davis) and send it to my school address:

Please keep in mind that every little bit helps in getting me closer to my goal and making an impact in the lives of thousands. Please help me on my journey of aspiring to inspire. Thank you so much for any involvement and please remember to keep me in your thoughts and prayers!
With Love,
Amanda Davis

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on Medical and Dental Brigades work closely together with licensed medical and dental professionals to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient receives a physician consultation, public health talk, and prescribed medicines as well as have access to PAP smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Children, in addition, receive teeth cleaning, a fluoride treatment, and vitamins necessary for proper growth and development. Volunteers have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
