Notre Dame Med/Dent/PH Brigade Nicaragua March 2015

Amanda's Message

Hey all! I'm Amanda and I'm a sophomore at the University of Notre Dame majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior. I have been blessed with a second opportunity to travel to Nicaragua on a medical brigade with the University's chapter of Global Medical Brigades. I am beyond excited to repeat what was one of the most impacting and enjoyable trips of my life! At the same time, I need a lot of help fundraising... Anything is appreciated!

A little about me...
I'm from Colorado Springs, Colorado. I adore studying both health and psychology. I hope to go into the medical field either as a physician or a researcher. I am very interested in global health, involving both prevention and clinical care. I am also passionate about foreign language because I believe the ability to communicate with, learn from, and share with others is one of the most valuable traits among people. I have been blessed with an excess in life: an amazing family that constantly supports me, the means for comfortable living and health care, and the opportunity to give the excess I have. I cannot wait to serve the beautiful people of rural Nicaragua again. They have so much to teach and I so much to learn.

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on the Medical and Dental Brigades will be working closely together to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers will spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient will receive a physician consultation, teeth cleaning and a fluoride treatment as well as have access to pap smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Volunteers will have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
