Amit's Message

Over the past three years at school here at IU, I have dreamt of accomplishing a few goals that I believed would be life changing, affecting my perspective of this world and my place in its future. The three goals:
1. Become an EMT and volunteer both on campus and with Magen David Adom
2. Start my own group on campus
3. Go on a brigade with IU Global Medical Brigades to help those in the world without basic health care we take for granted.

Two of these goals I have accomplished and continue to accomplish. I have become an EMT and volunteered as I wanted to, and have even become one of the first Overseas Instructor for Magen David Adom. I have recently started my own recognized organization on campus that will begin its activity on campus in the fall. The last goal is just two weeks away and I need your support to get there!

I will be embarking with an organization called Global Medical Brigades to the Cape Coast Region in Ghana, West Africa on a 10 day brigade trip to provide, alongside health professionals and 23 other IU students, health care to a small local community which otherwise does not have the proper means of receiving health care and medical attention.

Our group has purchased and collected over 350 pounds of medications and supplies that we will be taking along with us to distribute appropriately to all in need within the communities we will be working with. In addition to the medical and dental care we will also be building a ventilated household latrine for the community as a step towards developing and raising awareness regarding proper public health in the region.

I do not know what I will encounter as I venture on this journey with my fellow brigadiers. However, I do know and expect that this overseas experience will change my life, my perspective of this world in which we live and the lives of the community whom we will become a part of.

Unfortunately, as with all life-changing experiences, it comes at a price. I have worked this past year to earn the cost of my airfare, but am hoping you may be willing and able to contribute towards my in-country costs. Donations to Global Medical Brigades are tax deductible and are generously appreciated and thanked.

I look forward to sharing this extraordinary experience with you upon my return, and please forward this message to anyone you know that may be interested in donating and helping me better not only myself but primarily those in the Cape Coast region who do not have the necessary means of receiving simple health care and attention. Thank you for your support,

Amit
IU Global Medical Brigades

Volunteer Activity Description

Medical Brigades at Indiana University is a discipline of Global Brigades, the world's largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. The Indiana University chapter systematically works with more than 350 other university groups around the world to deliver and implement one of nine skill-based programs that benefit more than 130,000 Honduran, Panamanian, and Ghanaian community members annually.

Volunteers on the Medical and Dental Brigades will be working closely together to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers will spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient will receive a physician consultation, teeth cleaning and a fluoride treatment as well as have access to pap smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Volunteers will have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
