DePaul Medical/Dental Brigade June 2014 Ghana

Amy's Message

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page! After going on a Medical Brigade to Honduras the past two winters, I fell in love with Global Brigades, and everything it stands for. I think it changes peoples lives, not only the people that we serve but the students that attend the brigade. I have a passion for helping others, especially those who live in countries where they lack access to bacis necessities like clean water, safe homes and good health care.

This year I have the privilage of being a Program Director for the Medical Brigade to Ghana. We have put in a lot of hard work to organize this trip and get our DePaul students to Ghana this summer. My purpose in this is to serve others. We do this by providing physical labor, medical treatment and hope of a healthier future. Our other purpose is to show people that we care. One Honduran community member was speaking to our group this past winter about how thankful he was because we, as American college students, come from a place of privilege. We didn’t have to spend our vacation helping a community of people in poverty, But we did, and it shows them that people can care. We can care about people that we haven’t even met yet. We didn’t know the family before we went to Honduras but we already knew we wanted to help. I think its ingrained into human nature to be concerned for people that are suffering. Our role in this world is to act on that. We must resist the temptation to remain apathetic. In participating in Global Brigades, We choose to not be blind to the troubles of the world. We choose to open our minds and hearts to the lives of Ghanaian people and we hope that other people join us in this effort. I would not be able to serve the people in Ghana without your assistance. Any amount is greatly appreciated!! THANK YOU!!

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Medical and Dental Brigades in Ghana work alongside each other on a 10-day long brigade in under-resourced communities around the central region of Ghana. Each medical and dental brigade incorporates a public health portion at the end of the 4 clinical days. The 10-day medical brigade provides volunteers with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on communities while gaining hands-on experience in the field of international medicine. Prior to travel, volunteers collect medicines, recruit health professionals and fundraise. Once in Ghana, the team will visit one partner community to administer a 3-4 day-long clinic and conduct health workshops. During clinical days, community members are able to consult doctors and dentists, fill any necessary prescriptions, receive necessary dental care, and facilitate health education lectures.
