During the first week of summer this year I will be traveling to Honduras as a member of a Public Health Brigade. This brigade is a small part of a larger program known as Global Brigades. There are many other types of brigades including medical, dental, engineering, and so many more.

As a junior studying Public Health with a focus on Health Management and Policy at Oregon State University, I have chosen to go on the Public Health Brigade. I am lucky enough to be participating in a great opportunity with a student organization on my campus that enables me to help others while simultaneously developing my own skills in health services. Going on this trip means that I have the chance to personally work with under-resourced communities in Honduras to improve their levels of water access and purity.

The World Bank has cited Honduras as the 3rd poorest country in the Western Hemisphere after Haiti and Nicaragua, and has been designated as a priority country by the Pan American Health Organization/WHO Strategic Plan. The basic needs of education, health care, and clean water are luxuries for most people in Honduras—especially in the rural areas where we will be working. It is highly common for a family of four to live on less than $2.00 a day with less than 3 gallons of water per day available to use.

This trip is extremely important to me, so I can have the chance to gather more insight on what we need to be focusing on, not just in America, but on a global scale. We are so privileged and so lucky in the United States and I believe it is so important for me to have the opportunity to travel somewhere else and do what I can to make things better.
