Passionate About:

In a few months time, I will be participating with Global Medical Brigades (GMB) on a charity project to HONDURAS 2013!
GMB is the world’s largest student-led global health and sustainable development organisation. The Nottingham University chapter of the charity is now in its third year and we hope to build and expand on the success of projects run previously. The project run by GMB Nottingham this year will provide Medical students from the university the chance to collaborate with the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) in a joint voluntary project to provide medical and dental services to a community in Honduras.

The project will be split in two, lasting ten days in total. The first project involves staffing a mobile medical and dental clinic within a rural community. Students will expand and develop their clinical skills as they facilitate the triage, consultations with doctors and distribution of medication to the community, thereby providing an immediate impact on those within the community. We also hope to raise awareness of disease prevention to those visiting the clinic, teaching fundamental skills such as hand hygiene and teeth brushing to the children of the community. This we hope will achieve long-term benefits for the whole community.

The second project focuses on improving the living conditions of a family selected by GMB within the community with the aim of preventing future health issues caused by poor sanitation, lack of water facilities and poor ventilation. The project involves refurbishment of the family’s home; providing necessities such as eco-stoves, concrete floors, water storage units and sewage facilities. Such developments will provide a life-long improvement to the quality of life for the family, and will achieve the sustainability objective of the charity.

Please help us fundraise for this amazing charity by donating to either myself or the team! Any amount of contributions will be greatly appreciated! xxx

Volunteer Activity Message

Volunteers on Medical and Dental Brigades work closely together with licensed medical and dental professionals to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Volunteers have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.

Public Health volunteers improve basic home infrastructure and provide health education to help reduce the incidences of life-threatening, but preventable, diseases in a rural community. Working side-by-side with community members and local masons, volunteers construct five infrastructure projects meant to improve the health of the home and surrounding environment: eco-stoves, latrines, pilas (water storage units), showers and concrete floors. Additionally, as a key component of the program, Public Health volunteers collaborate with the Basic Sanitation Committee and local teachers to help provide community-wide education workshops and training, proliferating sanitation and hygiene practices and empowering families with both the knowledge and tools to live healthier lives.
