Hey Friends!

Some of you may not know this about me, but I have a HUGE passion for the medical field and providing medical access to under-reached Hispanic communities. Fortunately, I have been given the opportunity to go to Nicaragua through a non-profit organization known as Global Medical Training (GMT).

GMT has made dozens of trips to Panama, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and other Central American countries in the past, so I'm thrilled that I get to accompany them and experience the hands-on portion of the group. This trip will give me the chance to not only serve as student doctor, but also be directly involved in the diagnosis and treatment of patients under the supervision of a licensed physician. GMT emphasizes the students as the most integral part of the mission, so in addition to shadowing doctors, each student participates in providing medicine and treatment to those in poverty-stricken areas lacking essential healthcare.

It is our goal to visit the rural villages in Nicaragua to administer health screenings, physicals, and/or whatever medical attention each person may need. We will spend 4 days in clinic, and over the week we will treat over 2,000 patients, sometimes significantly more depending on demand. Prior to our trip, we anticipate the medications and supplies that will be needed in order to provide adequate care for each patient, then purchase these to take with us. Right now, the greatest need is for Naproxen and children's vitamins.

This volunteer opportunity will provide me with new clinical experience that will play a major role in helping me to pursue my interest in the medical field, and also give me the opportunity to gain a fresh perspective of healthcare. The only thing is, I need YOUR help! Any donation will bring me closer to my goal of raising enough funds for my trip, and it will also provide funding for the group to administer adequate supplies and care for each individual that we assess.
