Kansas City Medical Brigade Dec 2012 Honduras

Brandon's Message

This coming December I will be embarking on a trip to Honduras with fellow class mates, physicians and other volunteers to provide medical and dental care to the underserved population in this area. Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere and things that we take for granted such as clean water, health care, and education are luxuries that many people in Honduras do not have access to.
Many trips are organized to help underserved populations around the world, but what is unique about the program we are participating with is that the focus is on sustainable healthcare and education. Everyone knows the phrase if you give a man a fish you feed him for a night, if you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime. This is why I am helping to lead the education portion of our trip. We will be using our resources to teach the men, women, and children about proper hygiene, self-exams, and other simple techniques so they can maintain their health well after we leave the area.
As many of you know, I am very passionate about supporting underserved communities. Please join me by making a small donation to help me raise money for the trip so we can provide the underserved communities of Honduras medical care, dental care, and educational resources that they desperately need. Any donation is much appreciated and will be put to good use. Thank you so much for your support.

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on the Medical and Dental Brigades will be working closely together to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers will spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient will receive a physician consultation, teeth cleaning and a fluoride treatment as well as have access to pap smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Volunteers will have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
