Brett's Message

Nicaragua

Dear Friends and family,

As you may or may not know, I have been given the fantastic opportunity of going to the country of Nicaragua this December. When there, I will being working with the organization, Global Brigades, which is the world’s largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. Since 2004, Global Brigades has mobilized thousands of university students and professionals through skill-based service programs to improve the quality of life in under resourced communities.

For those of you who know, I had an experience similar to this two summers ago. I went to the country of Ghana. I will be doing the same type of medical work, I will be working alongside physicians, helping treat the ill, teaching communities necessary life skills, and fulfilling my overwhelming passion of helping others.

As many of you could have guessed, this trip does not come at a cheap price, whereas I know that personally I would not be able to send myself there. However with the help of others I truly believe that this dream of mine is capable of coming true. I am asking for any donations. Every dollar will make a difference, and every dollar will mean the world to not only me, but to the people of the communities that I will be helping.

Thank you
Brett Seaholm

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades offers a 9 day Medical/Public Health Brigade for volunteers to participate in throughout the year in Nicaragua. Medical Brigade volunteers have the opportunity to shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are treated and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to work with local Community Health Worker (CHW), known as Brigadistas, to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.

Coming on a medical/dental/public health brigade to Nicaragua, you have the advantage of getting to know where Global Brigades (GB) has recently decided to start work. A nine day brigade includes a tour of the surrounding area, three clinic days, and three public health project implementation days. Through these public health brigade days you will get the unique opportunity to learn about Global Brigades’ sustainable holistic model and how we are attacking the root causes of the majority of symptoms one sees on a medical brigade. The main health concerns in our communities include diarrhea, respiratory illnesses, waterborne illnesses and abdominal pain.
