University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign Veterinary Outreach trip to Peru, June 2019

Brianna's Message

I recently went on a study abroad trip through my university to Guatemala over winter break. I was able to help provide low cost veterinary care to pet owners and stray animals within different towns in Guatemala.

After realizing the huge positive impact that my team and I had on the local communities in Guatemala, I decided that in the future (especially in my career field) I would continue to volunteer my time and help to provide this type of veterinary care in other countries around the world. Little did I know the opportunity would come so soon!

This summer I hope to go on a 2 week volunteer trip to Peru in which I will assist veterinarians in providing low cost veterinary care to pets, farm animals, and even wildlife within the country. I will be volunteering through a nonprofit organization that operates on donations, which means I have to start fundraising to be able to go on this trip and volunteer with a team of other students. I appreciate any and all donations- your donations not only help me travel over to Peru to volunteer, but they also help the local animals and wildlife who will be under our care during the trip!

Volunteer Activity Description

Join the UIUC chapter as they lead a Veterinary Outreach trip to Peru this upcoming Summer! Volunteers will work in mobile clinics, where they will have the opportunity to take patient history, basic vital signs, shadow veterinarians, learn about the importance of different animals in locals lives and much more! If you’re interested in joining, contact us for more information!

VAW at UIUC will be opening up mobile veterinary clinics for local communities as well as assisting at local animal care facilities during their time in Peru.

One of the most exciting and important parts of volunteering with VAW is bringing medication to the less fortunate. In 2018, VAW treated over 35,000 patients and we aspire to treat over 45,000 in 2019. One of the things that make our mobile clinics unique is that we not only triage and diagnose patients, but also provide them with the basic medications needed. Fundraising for medications is a huge part of creating a successful mobile clinic to help the local communities with effective care.

**Note: airfare goal will be updated once flights are purchased, tentatively the week of [March 11th- 18th, 2019]
