Exeter Human Rights Brigade Panama June 2015

Caitlin's Message

I'm so grateful that I have the opportunity to travel to Panama this summer with Human Rights Brigades; shadowing Panamanian lawyers providing pro-bono legal consultations to rural communities. This is going to be an amazing opportunity to make a positive difference to people who will really benefit from legal aid and also for me to gain an influential cross-cultural legal perspective. However, enough money needs to be raised for the trip to take place and this is where I need your help. As a team we are doing collective fundraising such as a charity dinner, pub quiz and numerous sales. I am also going to do some individual fundraising and am planning to partake in the Rock Solid Race for sponsorship. Any donation, however small, will make a big difference! I'm also planning to document the trip with a travel journal and photo blog that will update everyone on the work we will be doing out there. Thank you for visiting this page and don't forget to donate and spread the word! If you have any questions at all please don't hesitate to get in touch! Thanks again, Caitlin.

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades offers 7-day Human Rights Brigades throughout the year in Panama. Human Rights Brigades primarily work with rural communities that are under-resourced and largely unaware of their own legal rights. Throughout the week, Human Rights Brigades volunteers shadow Panamanian lawyers to provide pro-bono legal consulting to rural communities. A free legal clinic provides opportunities for volunteers to not only receive experience with Panamanian legal professionals but also experience first-hand the obstacles to justice and the culture of legal misinformation in rural communities. Volunteers also work to provide capacity building and education-based workshops on various legal concepts to empower communities through education. Additionally, volunteers continue shadowing Panamanian lawyers while they gather important information to initiate the process of resolving family legal cases, many of which have been stalled in Panama's legal system through institutional inefficiencies and the prohibitive high costs of legal services. Between brigades, Global Brigades’ in-country staff works to secure legal outcomes and provide follow-up to the community.
