Passionate About:

Hello, my name is Carla Canales, and I’m deeply passionate about advancing our understanding of both neural engineering and cancer biology. Through my current studies and research, I’ve been fortunate to work on projects that could make a real difference in healthcare. I focus on investigating the complex mechanisms behind diseases like Ewing sarcoma, using innovative techniques such as single-cell western blotting to study proteins like ARID1A and EWS-FLI1. These efforts could lead to breakthroughs in cancer treatment.

Beyond science, I am passionate about staying active and enjoying sports, which keep me grounded and driven. My family’s values have shaped my belief in hard work, resilience, and giving back, inspiring me to make a positive difference in the world.

Your support will help me continue my education and research, while also raising awareness of these important issues. Together, we can work toward a healthier and more compassionate future.

Thank you for being part of this journey!

Upcoming Initiatives

Rice University Medical Internship to Guatemala, May 2025

Join the Rice University chapter as they lead a Medical Outreach Internship to Guatemala this upcoming Summer! interns will work in mobile medical clinics, where they will have the opportunity to intake patients, conduct public health surveys, take vitals, shadow local physicians, work in the pharmacy, teach education classes, and much more! If you’re interested in joining, contact us for more information! VAW Global at Rice University will be opening up mobile medical clinics for local communities during their time in Guatemala. One of the most exciting and important parts of interning with VAW Global is bringing medication to the less fortunate. In 2023, VAW Global treated over 17,500 patients and we aspire to treat over 20,000 in 2024! One of the things that make our mobile clinics unique is that we not only triage and diagnose patients, but also provide them with the basic medications needed. Fundraising for medications is a huge part of creating a successful mobile clinic to help the local communities with effective care. **Note: airfare is not included
