• About Children's Humanitarian International (CHI)
Children’s Humanitarian International (CHI) is a global organization dedicated to empowering, educating, and providing for children. CHI's first international project got underway in January 2011 when we began raising funds to help Kenyan children in need attend schools that we partnered with. As our international program gained attention and our support base grew, in January 2016 we were able to expand our program by launching our own school, CHI Academy. Located a short distance from Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, it serves nearly 300 students.

Simultaneously, CHI launched its first binational project, CHI Summer Abroad, designed primarily to benefit high school students from Sonoma County, California, but also CHI Academy students in Kenya. The program centers on a five-week study-abroad trip to CHI Academy for Sonoma County students – half of whom come from socio-economically disadvantaged families and are awarded all-expenses-paid internships to allow their participation.

Both CHI Academy and the CHI Summer Abroad program aim to strengthen children’s education, equip them with leadership skills, motivate them to get involved in their communities, and create long-lasting success, not "Band-Aid solutions."

CHI Academy

Our goal is to provide quality care and learning, expose our children to an extremely child friendly environment and curriculum. We will offer the Kenyan 8-4-4 system but blend it with rich elements from a variety of practical learning styles. We would like our children to enjoy many extracurricular activities which include supervised daily play with a wide range of age appropriate stimulating games to help us nurture talents and instill basic computer knowledge and skills for easier learning. CHI believes strongly that we do not know the answers to everything, and some solutions may work in certain areas and not in others. We know very well that it is not our place to impose Western ideals on others. We listen to the communities that we work in and all of our international programs are developed and managed by the local community in which they aid.

CHI Summer Abroad

At CHI, we aim to create a passionate group of informed high school students who can bring back to Sonoma County the knowledge of the world they gain and share their experiences with other local students now and with others they meet throughout their lives. It is our goal to build a unique program that can foster a community of returned CHI interns who not only better appreciate and value education, but have a broadened mindset they can use to help develop exciting new ways to tackle poverty here in Sonoma County and around the world. Upon return home, participants will be offered an important program of meetings and activities over a two-week period. This is an opportunity to come together and talk about their experiences both in Kenya and back in Sonoma County (where they may experience “reverse culture shock”). Meetings will take place three times each week and once during the (middle) weekend. Parents will be encouraged to attend the final meeting.
