London School of Economics Law Brigade June 2012

Chloe's Message

I am planning to go to Panama in the summer with a group of LSE Law Brigadiers, with the aim of facilitating sustainable legal solutions. To do this, I need to raise about £550 for programme costs and around £800 for my flight.

Why Panama? In Panama, over 80% of people have no secure land title for their property, there are no lawyers within a 120 miles radius and community members have no access to legal services. Communities in remote areas have little or no awareness of legal rights or concepts.

What will we do? We will work with Panamanian lawyers to provide solutions for legal issues and to lead pro bono clinics. There will be home visits, providing individual legal consulting, walk-throughs of land titling processes, issuing contracts and completing legal paperwork. We will also plan and conduct legal capacity building workshops to educate the rural communities.

Why do I want to do this? Before I begin my career as a corporate lawyer, I want to give back by contributing to change that is sustainable, through creating micro-community solutions with the legal knowledge I have obtained. I've never set foot in Central America, lived in very basic lodging or worked with rural communities at a grass-roots level. So this will be an extremely new and meaningful experience for me, but more importantly, it will deliver wider impact on those who really need sustainable solutions.

How does my donation help? This will support the program - logistics of the brigade (lodging, clean water, transportation, translators, etc), and to perpetuate programs when volunteers aren't there, such as follow-up and monitoring - to ensure sustainability and not just a one-off effect. Global Brigades also uses any leftover funds to create supplemental programmes and education grants. It is an audited, registered not-for-profit charity, with ALL funds going towards perpetuating our mission of sustainable development. Volunteer Activity Description

Law Brigades volunteers work with Panamanian lawyers to provide pro-bono legal consulting through a 8 day Law Brigade in Panama. Student volunteers can either join an existing Law Brigades chapter on their campus or create their own chapter and recruit other volunteers. Law Brigades provides services to remote communities using a free legal clinic model, where volunteers shadow and assist lawyers as they provide legal consulting to community members. Additionally, volunteers work to incorporate unregistered communities to empower them with rights and government benefits that they would not have received otherwise. Law Brigades primarily works with remote communities that are under resourced and largely unaware of their legal rights.
