Brandeis Public Health Brigade January 2015 Honduras

Ciara's Message

Friends, Family, Coworkers and Loved Ones,
My name is Ciara Williams and I am a current sophomore at Brandeis University, hoping to study Health: Science, Society and Policy, and Psychology. I am a part of Brandeis' Global Public Health Brigades, an initiative to educate a rural community in Honduras on the importance of public health. In January of 2015, I will travel to Honduras with fellow Brandeis students for 7 days to implement health education, health sustainability and infrastructural development, with the hope that these changes will continue long after our week-long excursion. I am so grateful to be part of such an impactful organization, and the next step is to work toward funding! Donating to my cause will make my dreams a reality, as trips like these are not always inexpensive. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about Global Public Health Brigades, or about how you can contribute to the initiative!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my page!

Volunteer Activity Description

BU volunteers spend 7 days in Honduras, improving basic home infrastructure and providing health education to help reduce the incidences of life-threatening, but preventable, diseases in a rural community. With an understanding of the holistic model that focuses on education, community health sustainability and infrastructural development, volunteers first receive a comprehensive introduction to the country's public health challenges and the Public Health programs ground-up solution. They will take a tour of the community Public Health is currently working in, introduce themselves to the beneficiary families, and meet with the Basic Sanitation Committee (CSB). Then, working side-by-side with community members and local masons, volunteers construct four infrastructure projects meant to improve the health of the home and surrounding environment: eco-stoves, latrines, pilas (water storage units), and concrete floors. Additionally, as a key component of the program, Brown volunteers collaborate with the Basic Sanitation Committee and local teachers to help provide community-wide education workshops and training, proliferating sanitation and hygiene practices and empowering families with both the knowledge and tools to live healthier lives
