Danielle's Message

I have always been interested in working with a rural or underprivileged community. In high school I volunteered in the free health clinic in Orange, VA. It amazed me at the number of people in my own community that this clinic served. In college, I participated in a nursing clinical in a rural community, much like my hometown. We learned about certain resources and served with them to better the lives of the low-income families that resided there. These resources, though slim, were extremely beneficial in these families’ lives. When this opportunity to go to Ghana arose, I immediately realized I was called to go. A chance to provide nursing care to children and families in a remote area of Africa are two of my passions. This trip has so many rewards. During the four days we have the clinic set up in Ghana many people will be treated. Not only are we treating the disease they have acquired since the last clinic, but also we are educating the children and families on ways to prevent certain illness and disease. Using my knowledge and skills to better the world through health care one family at a time is rewarding in itself, but so significant in the lives of underprivileged. Education is huge here in American and all over the world. Preventive health care is the goal of the future, and to be a part of this cause is fascinating.

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on Medical and Dental Brigades work closely together with licensed medical and dental professionals to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient receives a physician consultation, public health talk, and prescribed medicines as well as have access to PAP smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Children, in addition, receive teeth cleaning, a fluoride treatment, and vitamins necessary for proper growth and development. Volunteers have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
