Rutgers UNIVERSITY Medical Internship to Guatemala, JULY 2022

Dev's Message

I am beyond excited and lucky to have the opportunity to go on this trip and work along side my peers to help make a difference somewhere around the world. I admire VAW Global's mission of providing medical relief and health education to those in third world countries with limited resources and knowledge, all the while being with an organization that uses and advocates for sustainable medical practices and materials. Having the chance to travel to a different country and give back seems unimaginable, and embarking on this journey with Rutgers is truly a dream come true. Not only will we be gaining hands-on clinical experience, but also we get to explore the beautiful country of Guatemala and hold health education classes for young children. This combination of working with children, traveling, and using/advocating for sustainable healthcare practices summarize some of my main passions in life, and I can not wait to go on this trip and partake in any other collaborations in the future with Rutgers VAW Global.

Volunteer Activity Description

Join the Rutgers University chapter as they lead a Medical Outreach Internship to Guatemala this upcoming Summer! interns will work in mobile medical clinics, where they will have the opportunity to intake patients, conduct public health surveys, take vitals, shadow local physicians, work in the pharmacy, teach education classes, and much more! VAW Global at Rutgers University will be opening up mobile medical clinics for local communities during their time in Guatemala.

One of the most exciting and important parts of interning with VAW Global is bringing medication to the less fortunate. In 2019, VAW Global treated over 35,000 patients and we aspire to treat over 45,000 in 2020. One of the things that make our mobile clinics unique is that we not only triage and diagnose patients, but also provide them with the basic medications needed. Fundraising for medications is a huge part of creating a successful mobile clinic to help the local communities with effective care.

**Note: airfare goal will be updated once flights are purchased, tentatively the week of March 14th.
