Emily's Message

Hi everyone! I will be participating in my first Global Medical Brigades trip this coming May and I could not be more excited! Currently, I am working as an EMT at Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad, and my plan is to go on to nursing school after I graduate next year. Ultimately I'd like to become an NP and a Paramedic on the side, as I plan to continue running with a rescue squad for as long as I am able. I love patient care and getting to know new people, and I love gaining new skills and being able to teach those skills to others.
This May I will get a chance to do all of that and more in Nicaragua! I have a passion for travel and exploration, both geographically and culturally, and I am excited for the new experiences I'll gain. I will be traveling with fellow friends and EMTs, and other like-minded students from UVA who are interested in medicine and volunteering! I am looking forward to the trip of a lifetime, and the start of a life of adventure and volunteering abroad.
I'd appreciate any help you can provide, in the form of donations or support, more than words can say. Any amount helps, even one dollar. I want to thank you all for your support and encouragement!

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades offers 9-day Medical/Public Health Hybrid Brigades throughout the year in Honduras and Nicaragua. During the Medical component, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. During the Public Health component, volunteers develop sustainable health solutions and establish a standard of health quality by emphasizing prevention and education. The Public Health Program achieves this goal by implementing in-home infrastructure projects, providing health education, and engaging community members. Each Public Health Brigade will work with individual families, local schools, and community leaders with a focus on holistic and preventative health measures on both an individual and community-wide scale.
