Passionate About:

In the future, I would like to work with a non-profit organization, such as Doctors Without Borders, in order to bring medical aid to countries that either cannot afford it, or do not have access to it. I am part of an organization called Global Medical Brigades. This summer, in particular, we are going to Honduras to bring medical supplies and treatment to those, who are less fortunate there. Throughout the school year, we are raising money in order to pay for the supplies necessary for the brigade.

Thank you for you interest in Global Medical Brigades!
The University of Pittsburgh Chapter of Global Medical Brigades is raising funds to purchase medications and medical supplies to bring to the mobile medical clinic in Honduras. There, our group will spend one week, May 5-11, 2012, organizing and running the clinic for one rural community. We are recruiting both passionate undergraduates as well as U.S. physicians and dentists as volunteers for the brigade.

Our group is responsible for collecting all of the medications that will be distributed by health care professionals and Pitt students to the residents of the community.

The second priority for our funds is to cover the program contribution of $750 for each student attending the brigade.

The breakdown of the $750 is as follows:
Brigade Logistics - $350
Program specific contributions - $100
Contributions to community programs, education, and student leadership - $104
*Program sustainability and perpetuation - $174
Credit card processing fee, insurance, legal fees, taxes - $30
Other - $25

*Between brigades, Global Medical Brigades' in-country teams maintain relationships with the communities to provide follow-up. In Honduras, our Community Health Worker program empowers local leaders to perpetuate a consistent level of health care.
Please see www.globalbrigades.org for more information on the brigade program and sustainability initiatives.

Please feel free to direct any questions or comments to pittgmb@gmail.com.
In addition, more information about Pitt GMB's activities throughout the year and the brigade in May will be posted on our website: http://www.pitt.edu/~sorc/gmb/

Thank you for your generosity. It is donors like you who help turn student initiative ideas into a reality! We look forward to working with you in the future.

More information:
Medical Brigade volunteers set up medical clinics in pre-identified communities to provide healthcare where access is limited. Each community receives a brigade every 3-4 months and between brigades the in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and conducts community health worker trainings to empower local leaders to perpetuate a consistent level of healthcare.
Dental Brigade volunteers provide urgent and preventive dental services in communities with limited access to healthcare. Each of our community partners receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are treated with fillings, cleanings and extractions, and are given dental hygiene workshops.
