Acalanes Spring Break in Ecuador 2014

Jake's Message

Dear family and friends,

I have an amazing opportunity through my school, Acalanes High School, to travel to Bahía de Caráuez, Ecuador with a youth leadership organization called Global Student Embassy this spring. We leave on Thursday, March 28th, 2014 and return on Sunday, April 6th, 2014.

Our goals will be planting trees to prevent erosion, helping restore habitats for animals, and developing local school gardens. The gardens provides produce for the schools community and offer an interactive education on local food systems and organic farming. I will be working with fellow students from Los Lomas, Campolindo, and Miramonte high schools, biologists, and environmental activists to restore degraded areas around Bahía and La Punta Gorda. Ecuador suffers the highest rates of deforestation in South America. We are all affected by the climate change, and as youth we want do our part to help restore our natural environments for future generations. In addition, we will help build a sustainable garden at our local high schools upon our return.

Please help me raise the first $1000.00 by Friday, December 7th, 2013 and the rest by Friday, January 18th, 2014. I appreciate all your help and support.

Volunteer Activity Description

TRAVEL.
Traveling with GSE involves everything from visiting a native bird sanctuary to hiking along Ecuador’s beautiful coastline. Students enjoy authentic Ecuadorian cuisine and collaborate on local projects with their international peers.

LEARN.
GSE uses hands-on service-learning projects and cultural exchanges to provide students with life changing learning opportunities. Students develop ecological literacy and participate in grassroots international relations while building crucial 21st century skills such as communication and collaboration.

IMPACT.
Each year during exchange programs, students plant 3,000 native trees in La Punta Gorda Preserve. Students also work along side their Ecuadorian peers at Fanny de Baird High School to further develop their school garden. The garden provides produce for the school community and offers an interactive education on local food systems and organic farming.

GROW.
Plants aren’t the only things that grow! International travel facilitates profound transformation for students. Students leave the trip with a better understanding of different cultures and people, inspiring them to become change makers and leaders in their own community.
