Bath Human Rights Brigade - Panama Summer 2014

James's Message

'Who's gonna save the world tonight?'

A question asked by three of the great twenty-first century philosophers, Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello. Well boys, maybe not tonight, but this summer 12 Bath University students and I will try!

In June we are going to Panama to participate in a project aimed at legally ensuring human rights and other basic legal protections so that people living in abject conditions do not get manipulated into staying in the poverty cycle.

It would be really great if you could donate and to encourage you all to do so I have started the Grow the Fro Campaign!

For every £100 pound you lovely people donate I will grow my hair for a month. For those of you who remember the great fro of '08 you hopefully do not need any encouragement to see it again. For those who don't I have really terrible curly hair that when it is not tamed grown to what many call THE Jewfro.
I vow to never let it grow that long because it really is horrible for everyone but for one night only I am willing to let that baby grow.

So please help, its for such a great cause (and the Panama thing is quite good too) and I would love you forever if you could give whatever you could!

Thanks!

Volunteer Activity Description

Human Rights Brigades volunteers work with Panamanian lawyers to provide pro-bono legal consulting through a 10 day brigade in Panama. Human Rights Brigades provide services to remote communities, on a family by family basis. By focusing on the families of one community at a time, volunteers can not only shadow and assist lawyers as they provide legal consulting to community members, but also take an active role in providing legal assistance on a personalized scale.

Human Rights Brigades primarily work with remote communities that are under resourced and largely unaware of their legal rights. Volunteers lead legal education workshops tailored to the community on various topics such as: the land titling process, government institutions, family law, property rights, business rights, conflict resolution, etc. Student are able to put their legal research to practice and shadow lawyers in developing solutions to various legal problems. The brigade experience is a life changing experience for both the community members and our student volunteers!
