UT Dallas Medical Outreach trip to Guatemala, May 2017

Jane's Message

Hi everyone!

My name is Jane and I'm currently a sophomore at UC Berkeley. The main reason I set up this account is to help fundraise for a medical outreach program I'm hoping to volunteer with this summer in Guatemala. Volunteers will collaborate with local NGO's and physicians to work on public health & education projects as well as assist in free clinics that assess and medicate patients. The money funded will go towards medication, transportation, and housing abroad.
This is a remarkable opportunity that not only helps under developed regions but also volunteers such as myself who seek a future in humanitarian work. An ultimate goal of mine as a student studying healthcare is to able to assist people from all backgrounds in receiving adequate medical attention not only in my local community, but on a global scale as well. As I, and many others have acquired medical assistance from public programs, I truly do want to give back and aspire to one day administrate and cooperate with teams to support others financially and medically who are reliant on humanitarian aid. This eye opening experience is a hands-on way to comprehend the obstacles and work ethic behind such a project and would be a great learning experience towards my future endeavors.

Please donate if you can- every bit counts!

Volunteer Activity Description

Join the UT Dallas chapter as they lead a Medical Outreach trip to Guatemala this upcoming Summer! Volunteers will work in mobile medical clinics, where they will have the opportunity to intake patients, conduct public health surveys, take vitals, shadow local physicians, work in the pharmacy, teach education classes, and much more! If you’re interested in joining, contact us for more information!

VAW at UT Dallas will be opening up mobile medical clinics for local communities during their time in Guatemala.

One of the most exciting and important parts of volunteering with VAW is bringing medication to the less fortunate. In 2016, VAW treated over 35,000 patients and we aspire to treat over 45,000 in 2017. One of the things that make our mobile clinics unique is that we not only triage and diagnose patients, but also provide them with the basic medications needed. Fundraising for medications is a huge part of creating a successful mobile clinic to help the local communities with effective care.

**Note: airfare goal will be updated once flights are purchased, tentatively the week of 16-23 February
