Jassmin's Message

Hello Friends and family! My name is Jassmin Morales and I’m a fourth year student, majoring in geography and minoring in Geospatial Informational Science and Technology at UC Berkeley. The global student embassy program is a good fit for what I want to do after I graduate from UC Berkeley. As a geographer, I am able to map regions of injustice for non-profit organizations and help the community improve with new policy implementations.
Conventional farming is one of the main problems happening around the world and especially in Chacraseca, Nicaragua. Chacraseca is a place where the community members are in need of help to overcome many health problems due to nutritional causes. I see this as an opportunity to be the voice for community members and advocate for them to have a better life style.
In Chacraseca farmers have increasingly adopted conventional farming methods for the past 50 years, using products such as fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides without the proper safety gear for those administering these harmful chemicals. Today the soil is contaminated with harmful chemicals and the land is depleted of nutrients. This Practice has left the formerly rich soils into erosion strips.
Our goal during our stay in Chacraseca, Nicaragua is to stop the increase in health problems community members face due to malnutrition and environmental causes. This will be done by informing the local community about soil conservation and restoration, through a bio-intensive agriculture training workshops and demonstrations on a 2-acre organic farm in order to accomplish a holistic nutrition preventative health model.
Participating in this program will allow me to expand my skills and knowledge on how to conduct a successful international project; the only problem standing on my way is the financial cost. Receiving any donations is greatly appreciated. And by donating YOU will also be part of the cause! Please join me in this amazing project to promote a better living environment for communities around the world.

Volunteer Activity Description

Come join us in our efforts in Nicaragua this coming Spring Break! GSEs Nicaragua program focuses on sustainable agriculture practices in Chacraseca. The goal of our projects is to create and maintain biointensive gardens that produce healthy food for young students at all 13 schools in Chacraseca. Each year students work in collaboration with Nicaraguan leaders and students on projects such as creating garden beds, building a greenhouse, or setting up irrigation.

Traveling with GSE means working alongside our Nicaraguan peers, hiking up a volcano through the mist of Lake Nicaragua, and visiting beautiful colonial Leon, a center of culture and history with many beautiful murals and cathedrals. Students experience Nicaragua through discussions about the countries social and environmental history. GSE Nicaragua staff and students welcome groups to their community and share their experience working on their school farms. Participants sample delicious local cuisine served at family farms, at local restaurants, as well as meals specially prepared for us and brought to our hostel.
