Memorial University of Newfoundland Water/Public Health Brigade July 2015

Jessica's Message

Hi everyone! This is my second opportunity of going to Honduras to volunteer to help a community that doesn't have the necessities to live a health life. I am going July 09-19 2015 to complete a water brigade and a public health brigade.

Water brigade includes three days of physical work to build a water system to bring clean water to a community that doesn't have access to clean water. This will help with many families that have to send a family member off everyday to walk hours on hours to find water that is either clean or dirty and filled with parasites.

Public Health brigade splits the volunteers into groups to go to a few (three last year) family homes to 1) create a cement floor to prevent infected bugs entering their homes, 2) a eco-friendly stove and chimney to prevent respiratory infections, 3) a latrine, which includes privacy for their shower, toilet, and a place to store clean water etc.

Please help me with my program fee for all the supplies needed for these brigades!

Thanks so much

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades offers 9-day Water & Public Health Brigades throughout the year in Honduras. Water Brigades' mission is to empower communities to access sufficient clean water through infrastructural development, water treatment, community leader training and education. Water Brigades volunteers assist in implementing clean water systems to prevent water-related illnesses in communities with limited access to clean water. One of the fundamental roadblocks to community development is lack of clean water. With a sufficient quantity of properly treated water, community members can cut off the connection between water and illness and ultimately live healthier, more productive lives. Volunteers work side-by-side with community members as well as with our in-country project technicians in all aspects of the water system's construction while learning about its design, functionality, and long-term sustainability. On Public Health Brigades, volunteers develop sustainable health solutions and establish a standard of health quality by emphasizing prevention and education. The Public Health Program achieves this goal by implementing in-home infrastructure projects, providing health education, and engaging community members. Each Public Health Brigade will work with individual families, local schools, and community leaders with a focus on holistic and preventative health measures on both an individual and community-wide scale.
