Loyola Medical/Dental Brigade Jan 2013 Honduras

Jordyn's Message

More than 1 million Hondurans remain highly marginalized, with limited access to basic services and low levels of social participation. More than half the population lives in poverty, suffering from marked economic and educational inequality and inequality in access to services. Unemployment is rising substantially, with an increase in hidden underemployment. Under the Pan American Health Organization Honduras is designated a priority country, being one of the four poorest highly indebted countries in the Region of the Americas. This implies the need for intensified cooperation to bridge the health gaps both inside the country and with other countries of the Region.

Therefore, I am participating in a one week Medical Brigade with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a poverty stricken community in Honduras. I also hope to gain
real life experience in the field of international medicine. Prior to travel, I will be collecting medicines, recruiting health professionals and fundraising. Once in Honduras, my team will visit a partner community to administer day-long clinics and conduct health workshops. The mobile clinic involves working in triage, shadowing doctors as they diagnose and prescribe, filling prescriptions with the medication we bring, and delivering workshops on preventive healthcare.

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on Medical and Dental Brigades work closely together with licensed medical and dental professionals to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient receives a physician consultation, public health talk, and prescribed medicines as well as have access to PAP smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Children, in addition, receive teeth cleaning, a fluoride treatment, and vitamins necessary for proper growth and development. Volunteers have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
