Hampton Medical Outreach trip to Guatemala, May 2017

Jyra's Message

As a first year Biology Pre-Med student at Hampton University I have been given the opportunity to experience a medical outreach program in Guatemala. This program will allow me to volunteer in a medical clinic in Guatemala for two weeks this summer. The clinic will consist of lower class families that do not have the fortune of being able to get regular checkups by medical professionals throughout the year. Hampton University has partnered with Volunteers Around the World and selected five students, including myself, to travel to Guatemala to make a lasting impact on people’s lives and start a new tradition at Hampton University.
Since 2010 I set my career goal to become a doctor. This is an amazing opportunity for me to be selected to participate in this trip for more than one reason; I have the opportunity to volunteer my time for people less fortunate, it will prepare me academically and for my future career, and I have the chance to travel! The trip will also help build my resume and better my chances to get accepted into a great medical school.
This trip will be one of my short term goals come true, but in order for this to happen I need YOUR help. As I said before this is a voluntary trip to Guatemala but I still have payments that need to be made in order for me to go.

Volunteer Activity Description

Join the Hampton chapter as they lead a Medical Outreach trip to Guatemala this upcoming Summer! Volunteers will work in mobile medical clinics, where they will have the opportunity to intake patients, conduct public health surveys, take vitals, shadow local physicians, work in the pharmacy, teach education classes, and much more! If you’re interested in joining, contact us for more information!

VAW at Hampton will be opening up mobile medical clinics for local communities during their time in Guatemala.

One of the most exciting and important parts of volunteering with VAW is bringing medication to the less fortunate. In 2016, VAW treated over 35,000 patients and we aspire to treat over 45,000 in 2017. One of the things that make our mobile clinics unique is that we not only triage and diagnose patients, but also provide them with the basic medications needed. Fundraising for medications is a huge part of creating a successful mobile clinic to help the local communities with effective care.

**Note: airfare goal will be updated once flights are purchased, tentatively the week of 7-14 March.
