Kaila's Message

Dear Friends, Family, and Loved Ones,

My name is Kaila Hood, and I am a current first year at Brandeis University looking to study Health: Science, Society, and Policy. I am passionate about health and service, and I am committed to fostering global communities and global understanding. After Brandeis, I hope to work abroad providing health care to underserved communities and families. However, I don’t want to wait until after I graduate to begin working in international health. Which is why I am writing to you today.

The Global Brigades club at Brandeis University sends forty students to Honduras each February with the one goal of improving the quality of life for many rural Hondurans. They set out to establish up a week-long clinic staffed by American Healthcare Professionals, to construct a wide-variety of public health projects in the homes of many Hondurans, and to teach entire villages about Public Health and sanitation practices. This opportunity would not be possible were it not for the Global Brigades club itself.

Global Brigades is a nonprofit organization that empowers college students to effect positive social changes in diverse global communities and make a strong impact on many lives. The Brandeis Public Health, Medical, and Microfinance Brigades strive to improve the quality of life and health of many rural Hondurans, who would not otherwise have access to any form of healthcare or rural banking. The club gives us the opportunity to work with actual doctors and other healthcare professionals in order to institute sustainable and higher-quality health practices within a community. With Global Brigades, I seek to broaden my own perspective on global health and to empower others to lead healthier lives.

However, I will not be able to go to Honduras or help to empower those communities without YOUR help. As you can see, this program comes with a price tag, and I need your help to make my dream of helping this community a reality. Any form of generosity is hugely appreciated and gets me one step closer to Honduras. Every dollar counts and can be donated to my page at http://www.empowered.org/Brandeis-University-PHB-January-2014-Honduras/volunteer/Kaila-Hood However, if you are not in the position to donate, please simply forward my page to any friends, family, co-workers, and/or neighbors to spread awareness for my cause.

I would like to express my gratitude for your time and generosity. Any and all support is greatly appreciated and helps to improve the lives of many rural Hondurans in need. Please feel free to reach out to me for more information or other ways you can help!

Warmest Regards,
Kaila Hood

Volunteer Activity Description

Public Health volunteers spend 7 days in Honduras, improving basic home infrastructure and providing health education to help reduce the incidences of life-threatening, but preventable, diseases in a rural community. With an understanding of the holistic model that focuses on education, community health sustainability and infrastructural development, volunteers first receive a comprehensive introduction to the country\\\'s public health challenges and the Public Health program\\\'s ground-up solution. They will take a tour of the community Public Health is currently working in, introduce themselves to the beneficiary families, and meet with the Basic Sanitation Committee (CSB). Then, working side-by-side with community members and local masons, volunteers construct five infrastructure projects meant to improve the health of the home and surrounding environment: eco-stoves, latrines, pilas (water storage units), showers and concrete floors. Additionally, as a key component of the program, Public Health volunteers collaborate with the Basic Sanitation Committee and local teachers to help provide community-wide education workshops and training, proliferating sanitation and hygiene practices and empowering families with both the knowledge and tools to live healthier lives.
