Kansas City Medical Brigade Dec 2013 Honduras

Katherine's Message

This December, myself and nearly 40 other second year medical students and physicians will be traveling to Honduras with Global Brigades to provide free healthcare to under-served communities. This trip was planned entirely by Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences students to provide our classmates with an opportunity to participate in international medicine and service work. Because this trip is not organized by KCUMB, we have all put in many hours to plan the trip itself, get medical supplies donated, and fundraise money to help us pay for medical equipment.

During our week in Honduras, we will be working in a pre-established clinic where we will be responsible for fully staffing the unit and supplying all the necessary meds. Our clinics will include a general health department (similar to family medicine), Gynecology department, Pharmacy, and Dentistry Department. Because our clinics are in very rural and under-served areas, most people in the nearby villages have extremely limited access to healthcare. Many patients we see will have been living with aliments for months prior to our arrival. Upon seeing hundreds of these patients, we will not only diagnose them, but provide them with medications to take home that very day. After traveling to Nicaragua on a medical service trip in the past, I've seen how very grateful each and every patient is for this. I've seen that such service truly changes people's lives, and I can't wait to do it again in Honduras!

We will be leaving on December 14th, 2013, and would like to ask for as much help as possible prior to that date. If you'd like to make a donation to help me with travel expenses, I would be extremely grateful. If you'd like to donate medicine, medical equipment , or make a monetary donation toward such items, it would be very helpful as well! Please spread the word about Global Brigades and the KCUMB 2nd year students that will be traveling to Honduras to improve the lives of others!

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on the Medical and Dental Brigades will be working closely together to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers will spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient will receive a physician consultation, teeth cleaning and a fluoride treatment as well as have access to pap smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Volunteers will have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
