Nottingham Med/Dent/PH Brigade May 2013

Lara's Message

In a few months, I will be heading to Honduras along with some other medical students as part of a charity called Global Medical Brigades (GMB). GMB is the world’s largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization.

The first project involves staffing a mobile medical and dental clinic within a rural community. We will facilitate the triage, consultations with doctors and distributions of medication to the community. We hope to raise awareness of disease prevention to those visiting the clinic, teaching fundamental skills such as hand hygiene and teeth brushing to the children within the community. We hope out input will benefit the community immediately and also have a lasting impact.

The second project focuses on improving conditions of a family selected by GMB within the community with the aim of preventing future health issues caused by poor sanitation, lack of water facilities and poor ventilation. The project involves refurbishment of the families home; providing necessities and hoping to provide a life-ling improvement in the quality of life for the family.

Please help by donating as little/much as you can, any amount of contributions is greatly appreciated… xxx

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on Medical and Dental Brigades work closely together with licensed medical and dental professionals to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Volunteers have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.

Public Health volunteers improve basic home infrastructure and provide health education to help reduce the incidences of life-threatening, but preventable, diseases in a rural community. Working side-by-side with community members and local masons, volunteers construct five infrastructure projects meant to improve the health of the home and surrounding environment: eco-stoves, latrines, pilas (water storage units), showers and concrete floors. Additionally, as a key component of the program, Public Health volunteers collaborate with the Basic Sanitation Committee and local teachers to help provide community-wide education workshops and training, proliferating sanitation and hygiene practices and empowering families with both the knowledge and tools to live healthier lives.
