Global Brigades United Kingdom

  • About Global Brigades United Kingdom
Headquarters for Global Brigades in the United Kingdom.

Global Brigades UK was founded in 2009. GB UK volunteers have participated in a variety of Global Brigades programs in Honduras, Panama, and Ghana. However, with the recent expansion of GB to Ghana, UK volunteers have began to focus more of their brigades to Ghana, focusing on the the Medical, Microfinance, and Water Brigades programs.

In 2010, GB UK grew from 35 brigaders to 80 brigaders, then in 2011 grew to 242 brigaders and in 2012 442 brigaders travelled around the world to take part in brigades. GB UK hopes to double the number of brigaders in 2013. Below are the current universities with Global Brigades chapters.

University of Leicester Legal Empowerment Brigades

University of Leicester is a chapter of Global Legal Empowerment Brigades, an international movement of students and attorneys providing legal education and financial resources for vulnerable families to resolve legal challenges. We focus our work with women in remote, rural, and under resourced communities who would otherwise have limited to no access to legal resources. Volunteers facilitate legal clinics with lawyers to provide pro-bono consulting and the financial resources for community members to help resolve cases. nnIn conjunction with our Legal Empowerment Program, Global Brigades also supports communities with healthcare, economic development, clean water and sanitation projects, and uniquely implements these programs in a holistic model to meet a community’s health and economic goals. University of Oxford Legal Empowerment Chapter

University of Oxford is a chapter of Global Legal Empowerment Brigades, an international movement of students and attorneys providing legal education and financial resources for vulnerable families to resolve legal challenges. Global Brigades offers 7-day Legal Empowerment Brigades year-round in Honduras and Greece. In Honduras, we focus on supporting remote, rural, and under-resourced communities that have limited or no access to legal services. In Greece, our work centers on assisting people on the move, ensuring they receive the international protection and legal support they need. Throughout the week, Legal Empowerment Brigade volunteers will be supporting to increase access to the universal right to justice for refugees and asylum seekers. Partnering with the Greek Council for Refugees and focusing on human rights education, volunteers provide practical legal education that aligns with our mission to increase access to asylum rights. This experience offers a firsthand look at how Global Brigades collaborates with and supports the refugee community in Athens. Volunteers also contribute to capacity-building workshops, educating communities on various legal concepts to empower them through knowledge. Additionally, they will gain insights into how Global Brigades’ holistic model works to empower communities in a sustainable manner. Between brigades, Global Brigades’ in-country teams continue to work on securing legal outcomes and providing ongoing support to the communities we serve.
