University of Oxford Legal Empowerment Chapter

  • About
University of Oxford is a chapter of Global Legal Empowerment Brigades, an international movement of students and attorneys providing legal education and financial resources for vulnerable families to resolve legal challenges. Global Brigades offers 7-day Legal Empowerment Brigades year-round in Honduras and Greece. In Honduras, we focus on supporting remote, rural, and under-resourced communities that have limited or no access to legal services. In Greece, our work centers on assisting people on the move, ensuring they receive the international protection and legal support they need.

Throughout the week, Legal Empowerment Brigade volunteers will be supporting to increase access to the universal right to justice for refugees and asylum seekers. Partnering with the Greek Council for Refugees and focusing on human rights education, volunteers provide practical legal education that aligns with our mission to increase access to asylum rights. This experience offers a firsthand look at how Global Brigades collaborates with and supports the refugee community in Athens.

Volunteers also contribute to capacity-building workshops, educating communities on various legal concepts to empower them through knowledge. Additionally, they will gain insights into how Global Brigades’ holistic model works to empower communities in a sustainable manner. Between brigades, Global Brigades’ in-country teams continue to work on securing legal outcomes and providing ongoing support to the communities we serve.

Volunteer Activity Description
Global Brigades offers 7-day Legal Empowerment Brigades throughout the year in Honduras and Panama. Legal Empowerment Brigades primarily work with rural communities that are under-resourced and largely unaware of their own legal rights. Throughout the week, Legal Empowerment Brigades volunteers shadow Honduran lawyers to provide pro-bono legal consulting to rural communities. A free legal clinic provides opportunities for volunteers to not only receive experience with Honduran legal professionals but also experience first-hand the obstacles to justice and the culture of legal misinformation in rural communities. Volunteers also work to provide capacity building and education-based workshops on various legal concepts to empower communities through education. Additionally, volunteers continue shadowing Honduran lawyers while they gather important information to initiate the process of resolving family legal cases, many of which have been stalled in the Honduran legal system through institutional inefficiencies and the prohibitive high costs of legal services. Between brigades, Global Brigades’ in-country staff works to secure legal outcomes and provide follow-up to the community.
